The SKF 33208 tapered roller bearing accommodates combined radial and axial loads whilst maintaining compact dimensions of 40x80x32 mm.
The SKF 33208 tapered roller bearing is a single-row roller bearing in the Explorer performance class, designed for demanding mechanical drives. With a bore of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 80 mm and a width of 32 mm, this roller bearing is particularly suitable for shaft mountings subject to combined radial and axial forces. The tapered rolling elements transmit loads via line contact and provide the bearing assembly with high rigidity. The specification comprises a complete tapered roller bearing in standard tolerance P0/PN, manufactured with a sheet steel cage.
This bearing accommodates radial loads and single-direction axial loads in gearboxes and general machinery designs. As single-row designs, by their very nature, can only handle axial forces in one direction, they are typically mounted in pairs facing each other. SKF’s Explorer design promotes smooth running and favourable lubricant film formation on the roller end faces. For maintenance engineers and original equipment manufacturers, this component offers a robust solution for industrial applications that demand high stability under varying operating conditions.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the tapered rollers precisely and withstands thermal loads in the range from -30 to +120 degrees. A key advantage of the open tapered roller bearing lies in its ability to be dismantled: the inner ring with roller cage and the flangeless outer ring can be fitted separately. This simplifies installation and allows for precise adjustment of the bearing clearance during assembly. When designing the application, ensure that lubrication is optimised and that a suitable external housing seal is used.
The roller bearing has an inside diameter of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 80 mm and a total width of 32 mm. These metric key dimensions simplify the design of new assemblies and facilitate the precise replacement of existing bearing units during repairs or scheduled maintenance.
Owing to the inclined raceway angle and the line contact of the conical rollers, this bearing can accommodate high radial forces simultaneously with axial forces. As the axial guidance, by design, acts in only one direction, the bearing is usually fitted in pairs in an X or O configuration with a mating bearing acting in the opposite direction.
The SKF Explorer version features enhanced manufacturing quality in terms of internal geometry and surface finish. The optimised contact zones between the rollers and raceways improve the formation of the lubricating film during operation. This reduces friction, which contributes to greater operational reliability and reduced heat generation during continuous operation.
The 33208 tapered roller bearing with a sheet steel cage is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. Within this temperature range, the bearing materials retain their dimensional stability. For actual operational use, the selected lubricant – whether grease or oil – must be suitable for these temperatures.
The designation P0 (also known as PN or ABEC 1) refers to the standard normal tolerance for rolling bearings. It defines the permissible dimensional and runout tolerances for the inner and outer rings. This accuracy class fully covers the vast majority of industrial applications in general mechanical engineering and gearbox construction.
The flangeless outer ring can be completely separated from the inner ring, including the roller set and cage. This separability considerably simplifies both step-by-step assembly and subsequent inspection work. Furthermore, the separable design allows the required operating clearance or preload to be precisely adjusted during assembly.
