The SKF 32304 tapered roller bearing accommodates combined radial and axial loads in mechanical engineering applications, with dimensions of 20 × 52 × 22.25 mm.
The single-row tapered roller bearing 32304 is designed as a complete rolling bearing and consists of an inner ring with a set of rollers and the corresponding outer ring. With an inner diameter of 20 mm, an outer diameter of 52 mm and a total width of 22.25 mm, this bearing transmits high forces within a confined space. It is manufactured to the SKF Explorer performance class with standard tolerance P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1). A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements along the raceways.
Due to the tapered arrangement of the raceways and rollers, this design is suitable for bearing arrangements where both radial and unilateral axial forces act simultaneously. Typical applications include shaft mountings subject to combined loads. As single-row tapered roller bearings, by design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, they are usually fitted in pairs in a mirror-image arrangement. Such an X or O arrangement accommodates thrust forces from both directions.
SKF’s Explorer design is engineered for demanding industrial applications. The permissible temperature range extends from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius, enabling the bearing to cope with a wide range of thermal conditions. The version with a sheet steel cage retains its dimensional stability even at varying speeds. As the bearing is designed as an open type without integrated seals, grease or lubricating oil can circulate freely. A suitable housing seal protects the bearing housing from contamination.
The bearing has a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 52 mm and a total width of 22.25 mm. These metric dimensions comply with the standardised 323 series and allow for direct replacement in suitably designed housings and shaft seats.
A single tapered roller bearing of this type accommodates axial loads in one direction only, in combination with radial forces. To provide axial guidance on both sides, two bearings must be fitted in pairs. These are positioned facing each other, usually in an O or X configuration.
The operating temperature range is between -30 and +120 degrees Celsius. Within this range, the components and the sheet steel cage maintain their dimensional accuracy. When selecting the lubricant, the specific operating conditions of the application should be taken into account to ensure the continuous formation of a lubricating film.
Tolerance class P0 (also referred to by SKF as standard tolerance PN) corresponds to the international accuracy class ABEC 1. It defines the permissible dimensional, geometric and running deviations for standard applications in general mechanical and plant engineering and ensures a defined fit accuracy.
Tapered roller bearings are not designed to be self-retaining. The outer ring can be fitted separately from the inner ring, together with the roller cage. This ability to dismantle the bearing significantly simplifies step-by-step installation in gearbox housings and onto shafts, as well as the precise adjustment of the operating clearance.
