The SKF 23228 CCK/C3W33 spherical roller bearing combines main dimensions of 140 × 250 × 88 mm with a tapered bore and increased C3 clearance for demanding industrial applications.
The SKF 23228 CCK/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing accommodates high radial and axial loads on both sides and automatically compensates for misalignment or shaft deflection. Manufactured from through-hardened 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, this open design covers a temperature range from –30 to +200 degrees. With a bore of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width of 88 mm, the bearing is suitable for heavy-duty shaft support in mechanical engineering. Two symmetrical rows of rollers and the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage ensure smooth running under continuous load.
This double-row self-aligning roller bearing is particularly recommended for applications involving high combined loads, where shaft deflection or misalignment between the bearing positions may occur. The open design allows unobstructed access for lubricant via the integrated circumferential groove and lubrication holes in the outer ring (W33). Thanks to its increased running accuracy to tolerance class P5, the bearing operates with low vibration even at high speeds. The W33 feature facilitates relubrication during operation directly via the housing system.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes a tapered bore with a ratio of 1:12. This taper allows for a fixed mounting on tapered shaft seats or, with the aid of clamping and withdrawal sleeves, on cylindrical shafts. During axial pressing, the inner ring expands slightly, which reduces the radial bearing clearance. The factory-set increased radial bearing clearance C3 compensates for this tightening of the fit as well as for temperature differences between the inner and outer rings caused by operation. This ensures that the rolling elements continue to run smoothly even under thermal stress.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 140 mm at the bore, an external diameter of 250 mm and a width of 88 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standard 23228 series. The tapered bore tapers across the bearing width at a standard taper ratio of 1:12.
The W33 version features a circumferential groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. This allows lubricant to flow directly through the housing between the two rows of rollers. This enables both raceways to be relubricated evenly whilst the bearing is in operation, without the lubricant having to be forced past the seals at the sides.
When the inner ring is pressed onto a tension sleeve or a tapered shaft seat, the ring expands, causing the radial clearance to decrease measurably. Bearing clearance class C3 provides greater clearance from the outset than the standard version, ensuring that the correct operating clearance remains after assembly.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 material and the sheet steel cage ensure dimensional stability at these temperatures. As this is an unsealed bearing, operators must ensure that the selected grease and any external seals are suitable for the relevant temperature range.
The dimensional accuracy of the connections complies with the standard PN class, whilst the running accuracy corresponds to the tighter P5 class. This reduces the radial and axial runout of the rings during rotation. Mechanical engineers specifically use this design to minimise running noise and dynamic imbalances.
The bearing is fitted directly onto a tapered journal or, using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve, onto a cylindrical shaft. A secure fit is achieved by sliding the inner ring onto the shaft axially. Fitters usually check for the correct fit by gradually reducing the bearing clearance using a feeler gauge between the rollers and the outer ring.
