The SKF 24040 CC/C3W33 spherical roller bearing, measuring 200 × 310 × 109 mm, compensates for misalignment and can handle very heavy radial loads.
The 24040 CC/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing is an open, double-row roller bearing designed for heavy-duty industrial applications. Thanks to the spherical outer ring raceway, the bearing can adjust its angle to accommodate shaft deflection or misalignment. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage, the design is rated for operating temperatures from -30 to +200 degrees. This version combines standard dimensional accuracy (PN) with enhanced running accuracy to tolerance class P5.
The self-aligning roller bearing is primarily used in heavy-duty shaft mountings where high radial forces and shock loads occur. Thanks to its design, the bearing compensates for misalignment between the housing and the shaft directly during operation. In addition to primarily radial forces, the design also accommodates axial guidance forces in both directions. As this is an open design, it is intended for operation within a lubricated and externally sealed housing.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance helps to prevent the bearing from becoming seized if operational heating or tight fits cause the rings to expand radially. The W33 designation indicates a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. Lubricant can be applied directly between the rows of rollers via these openings, which improves lubricant distribution within the bearing.
The bearing has a cylindrical bore of 200 mm, an outer diameter of 310 mm and a width of 109 mm. Due to its dimensions, installation requires suitable lifting equipment and appropriate tools to transfer the installation forces.
W33 denotes a ring-shaped lubrication groove together with radial lubrication holes on the outer ring. This feature is designed to deliver lubricant directly into the interior of the bearing. The lubricant is distributed symmetrically to both rows of rolling elements, enabling relubrication whilst the bearing is installed via lubrication channels in the housing.
The designation C3 indicates a radial clearance that exceeds the range of normal bearing clearance. This design prevents the rolling elements from jamming when temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings. Furthermore, the increased radial clearance compensates for any expansion of the inner ring in the case of fixed shaft fits.
This rolling bearing combines standard dimensional accuracy (PN) on the outer and inner diameters with the tighter running accuracy of tolerance class P5. The tighter P5 running tolerance reduces radial and axial runout during rotation. This promotes precise shaft concentricity in demanding industrial bearing applications.
As this bearing is designed without integrated seals, protection against dirt and moisture is provided by the surrounding bearing housing. Depending on the application, external sealing systems such as labyrinth seals or radial shaft seals on the housing cover are used to prevent the ingress of foreign particles and the loss of lubricant.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -30 and +200 degrees Celsius. The material properties of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage allow for use in areas of the plant subject to thermal stress, provided that a lubricant with the appropriate temperature resistance is used in the bearing system.
