The SKF 22226 EK self-aligning roller bearing, measuring 130 × 230 × 64 mm, with a tapered bore and lubrication groove, offers a high-load-capacity design for heavy-duty industrial applications.
The 22226 EK self-aligning roller bearing is an open, double-row self-aligning roller bearing made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). As a bearing in the 222 series, it automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection. Fitted with a sheet steel cage and standard radial clearance, this bearing operates over a wide temperature range from -30 to +200 degrees. Designs subject to high radial loads benefit from the SKF Explorer performance class version, which is designed for demanding operating environments in mechanical engineering.
Design engineers primarily use the 22226 EK self-aligning roller bearing where high radial forces occur and misalignment between the inner and outer rings needs to be compensated for. The integrated lubrication groove, complete with lubrication holes in the outer ring, allows for direct relubrication during operation. This ensures that the lubricating film remains continuously stable even under high operating loads. Due to the open design without an integrated seal, external housing seals and the selected lubricants determine the level of protection against contamination.
The design with a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 facilitates mounting on tapered shaft seats or using suitable mounting and withdrawal sleeves. Fitters can precisely adjust the remaining radial clearance during operation via the axial slide-on travel. The combination of standard dimensional accuracy (PN) and enhanced P5 running accuracy ensures smooth running and precise shaft guidance. When installing, ensure that the required radial clearance is accurately measured so that the rolling elements neither jam nor exhibit excessive play at operating temperature.
With a bore diameter of 130 mm, an outer diameter of 230 mm and a width of 64 mm, this roller bearing complies with the standardised dimensions of the 222 series. It is made from 100Cr6 bearing steel and, thanks to its two rows of rollers, can withstand substantial radial loads as well as combined axial forces in both directions.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes a tapered bore with a pitch ratio of 1:12. This design allows for direct mounting on tapered shaft seats or for use on cylindrical shafts by means of a locking sleeve. At the same time, when the inner ring is pressed onto the shaft, the radial bearing clearance can be finely adjusted to the desired operating condition.
The circumferential ring groove and the holes in the outer ring feed fresh lubricant directly into the interior of the bearing, between the two rows of rollers. This design feature ensures even distribution of lubricant across all contact surfaces, reduces frictional heat during operation and simplifies regular relubrication intervals in industrial bearing housings.
Whilst the external dimensions comply with the standard tolerance class ‘Normal’ (PN), the concentricity is specified to the finer P5 class. Tighter tolerances for flatness and concentricity reduce vibrations during operation and improve the guidance accuracy of rotating shafts whilst maintaining a secure bearing fit.
This roller bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. The integrated sheet steel cage can easily withstand these temperatures. For operation at the temperature limits, the lubricant and the bearing housing’s external sealing systems must be selected to cope with the corresponding thermal stresses.
The open design, which does not feature integrated grinding or cover discs, allows for flexible lubrication with grease or oil via centralised lubrication systems. It also permits higher rotational speeds than variants with contact seals. Protection against dust, dirt and moisture is provided by external labyrinth seals or shaft seals in the main machine housing.
