SKF 22317 E self-aligning roller bearing: An open self-aligning roller bearing with an 85 mm bore, 180 mm outer diameter and 60 mm width for demanding industrial applications.
The SKF 22317 E self-aligning roller bearing is designed for radial and combined loads in industrial machinery. As a double-row roller bearing, it automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. This open roller bearing, made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6), measures 85x180x60 mm and features the SKF Explorer performance class. Fitted with a sheet steel cage and standard radial clearance, this version reliably withstands operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +200 degrees Celsius.
This self-aligning roller bearing is suitable for applications involving high radial loads and combined forces, whilst also accommodating misalignment. Designs where shaft deflection may occur between bearing locations benefit from the angularly adjustable roller guidance. As the bearing is of open design, it can be integrated into existing oil or grease lubrication systems. The lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring ensures a uniform supply of lubricant directly into the bearing interior, which reduces friction and limits temperature rise during continuous operation.
The Explorer version of the 22317 E combines dimensional accuracy in accordance with Class PN with increased running accuracy of Class P5. This tighter-toleranced running accuracy reduces vibrations and promotes smooth rotational movement. For lubrication, the component utilises the integrated lubrication groove and the holes in the outer ring. As the open bearing is not sealed, an external housing seal protects the interior from contamination. The integrated sheet steel cage reliably guides the rolling elements.
With an internal diameter of 85 mm, an external diameter of 180 mm and a width of 60 mm, this size complies with standard metric dimensions. This allows it to be fitted into suitable housing designs that are designed for this metric size.
The dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class PN (standard tolerance), whilst the running accuracy is manufactured to the tighter P5 class. This ensures more precise concentricity of the inner and outer rings, which minimises concentricity errors, reduces running noise and contributes to the quiet operation of rotating shafts.
For lubrication, the component features a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. Grease or lubricating oil can be applied directly between the two rows of rollers via these channels. As the bearing is of an open design, sealing against environmental influences is provided by the surrounding housing structure.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. The standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensionally stable structure within this temperature range. The lubricant selected should always be suited to the specific operating temperature of the application.
The ‘Normal’ bearing clearance class describes the standard radial clearance between the rolling elements and raceways when no load is applied. It is designed for typical shaft-to-housing fits and normal operating temperatures, so that the rollers run with the intended clearance during operation.
SKF’s Explorer-class spherical roller bearings are based on an advanced rolling-bearing steel and optimised contact geometries between the rollers and raceways. These features help to reduce stress peaks in the material, minimise friction during operation and enhance fatigue strength under demanding load conditions.
