The SKF 2309 EKTN9/C3 self-aligning ball bearing, with a tapered bore (45x100x36 mm) and C3 clearance, reliably compensates for misalignment in demanding shaft-bearing arrangements.
The SKF 2309 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing absorbs radial forces and compensates for design-related misalignments of the shaft. Thanks to the continuous, hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring, the two rows of balls pivot dynamically with the shaft. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6 and fitted with a lightweight polyamide cage, this open rolling bearing is suitable for industrial applications where lubricants are supplied directly to the bearing location.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians primarily use this double-row bearing where long shafts deflect under load or where there are manufacturing-related misalignments between the bearing housings. As the open bearing is designed without integrated sealing washers, lubrication is provided via an external system using grease or lubricating oil. The bearing operates within a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees and is suitable for corresponding operating conditions in general mechanical engineering.
The designation ‘K’ indicates a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, which allows for secure mounting on cylindrical shaft journals using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve. The slightly increased radial clearance (C3) provides the necessary leeway: When the inner ring is pushed onto the shaft, the bearing clearance is reduced in a controlled manner, ensuring that proper function is maintained even after the inner ring has been secured. Furthermore, the additional radial clearance accommodates thermal linear expansion during continuous operation.
This double-row self-aligning ball bearing has a common spherical raceway in the outer ring, allowing the inner ring and ball set to align freely during operation. This version has a tapered bore with a nominal diameter of 45 mm, an outer diameter of 100 mm and a width of 36 mm. A dimensionally stable polyamide cage guides the rolling elements with minimal vibration.
The letter combination describes key design features of the manufacturer SKF. The ‘K’ stands for the tapered internal bore with a 1:12 taper. The abbreviation ‘TN9’ denotes an injection-moulded polyamide cage, whilst the suffix ‘C3’ indicates a radial clearance that is slightly greater than the standard version prior to installation.
When a roller bearing with a tapered bore is pressed onto a shaft or sleeve, the inner ring expands slightly. This process reduces the existing bearing clearance. The C3 bearing clearance prevents the bearing from running too tightly after assembly and provides thermal reserves at higher operating temperatures.
As this bearing is of open design and has no factory-fitted seals, the lubricant must be supplied via the housing. Depending on the speed and operating environment, mineral oil-based grease or oil lubrication is used. A suitable external housing seal protects the bearing housing from the ingress of dust and dirt.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The limiting factor for the maximum temperature is the polyamide cage, which would lose its strength if subjected to extreme, prolonged heat. However, this range offers sufficient leeway for typical industrial gearboxes and machine shafts.
The model complies with tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 standard. This class defines the dimensional and tolerance limits for standard industrial use, without requiring disproportionately tight manufacturing tolerances.
