The SKF 2308 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing, with a tapered bore, compensates for misalignment with a shaft diameter of 40 mm.
The SKF 2308 EKTN9/C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. This design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. The open bearing has the following main dimensions: 40 mm bore, 90 mm outer diameter and 33 mm width. Fitted with a lightweight polyamide cage and a tolerance class of Normal (P0/ABEC 1), it is suitable for industrial designs with demanding alignment conditions.
This double-row bearing proves particularly effective where shaft deflection or misalignment between the inner and outer rings occurs. Thanks to the spherical raceway in the outer ring, the two rows of balls compensate for angular misalignment without a significant increase in friction. Typical applications include long shaft runs or separated housing positions in general mechanical engineering. The open bearing allows for targeted lubrication with oil or grease via the machine housing and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees.
The tapered bore with a 1:12 taper enables secure mounting on cylindrical shafts using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve, as well as directly on tapered bearing seats. During radial press-fit installation, the bearing clearance is reduced. The slightly increased C3 radial bearing clearance specifically compensates for this loss of clearance as well as thermal expansion during operation, thereby preventing the rolling elements from jamming. The ball-guided polyamide cage also reduces running noise and the moving mass within the bearing.
The letter combination indicates specific design features: the letter K stands for the tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. The suffix TN9 denotes the polyamide cage, whilst C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance in the initial state. These features facilitate mounting on sleeves and support operation under thermal expansion.
The bearing has a bore diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 33 mm. As a double-row design, the roller bearing is manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and is classified to the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1.
Bearings with a tapered bore are usually mounted on smooth shafts using adapter sleeves, or directly onto stepped, tapered shaft journals. When the inner ring is pushed onto the shaft, it expands, thereby reducing the bearing clearance. The C3 bearing clearance provides the necessary leeway to ensure that the correct operating radial clearance remains after press-fitting.
As the bearing is designed as an open type without integrated sealing washers, sealing is provided by the surrounding housing structure. You can lubricate the bearing flexibly with grease or oil, depending on the requirements of the overall system. The open system also makes it easier to carry out targeted relubrication and to flush out lubricant residues during scheduled maintenance intervals.
The roller bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The temperature limits are determined by the thermal resistance of the polyamide cage and the 100Cr6 steel. Within this range, the polyamide cage retains its elastic properties, which ensures smooth ball movement and stable guidance of the rolling elements.
The polyamide cage is characterised by its low weight and good sliding properties. Compared with solid metal cages, the lightweight material reduces inertial forces during speed changes and minimises running noise. Furthermore, the material exhibits good resistance to common lubricants within the permissible temperature range.
