The SKF 1217 self-aligning ball bearing (85x150x28 mm) is a double-row, open roller bearing that compensates for both static and dynamic angular misalignment during operation.
The 1217 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a common spherical raceway in the outer ring. This design enables the two rows of balls to compensate for misalignment or shaft deflection during rotation. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and fitted with a sheet steel cage, this bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees. With a cylindrical bore of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 150 mm and a width of 28 mm, it complies with the standard tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians use the 1217 self-aligning ball bearing in long shaft guides where elastic deflection or misalignment between the bearing locations may occur. The bearing primarily absorbs radial loads and reliably guides the rotating shaft even in the event of slight misalignments. Typical areas of application include industrial applications and mechanical engineering assemblies where housing misalignment or installation-related distortion needs to be compensated for.
The 1217 self-aligning ball bearing is an open design without integrated seals. This allows the lubricant – grease or oil – to be selected to suit the specific operating conditions and, if necessary, replenished from the outside. On-site, an external housing seal is recommended to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture. The standard radial bearing clearance is designed for standard operating conditions with uniform temperature distribution.
The bearing has a bore of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 150 mm and a width of 28 mm. These standardised key dimensions allow for direct installation in standardised housings and shaft seats.
The outer ring of the bearing has a continuous hollow spherical raceway. The two rows of balls, together with the inner ring, are free to move within this spherical shell. This enables the bearing to compensate for misalignments caused by shaft deflection or misalignment during assembly without generating unacceptably high edge pressures.
The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements of both rows of balls and is characterised by its low weight and good lubricant permeability. It is resistant to standard lubricants and fully covers the bearing’s operating temperature range from -30 to +150 degrees.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the conventional operating clearance between the rolling elements and raceways when the bearing is unmounted. It covers typical industrial applications where standard fits are used on the shaft and housing and normal operating temperatures prevail.
As the bearing is designed without seals, the lubricant can be selected freely to suit the operating speed and operating conditions. In the case of grease lubrication, the grease is applied before commissioning, whilst in the case of oil bath or recirculating lubrication, the lubricant is supplied directly to the rows of balls within the housing.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. The dimensional stability of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage is maintained within this temperature range, provided that the lubricant used is suitable for the respective temperature range.
