Four Point Contact B. SKF QJ314 MA

The SKF QJ314 MA four-point bearing, with a 70 mm bore, accommodates high axial forces in both directions whilst requiring minimal axial installation space.

The SKF QJ314 MA four-point bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing with a split inner ring, designed for alternating or purely axial loads. Thanks to the geometry of the raceways, the rolling bearing supports axial forces in both directions with high positioning accuracy. In the Explorer version, this component features an optimised internal geometry. Fitted with a brass cage and standard radial clearance, this open bearing is used in applications subject to high axial loads.

What is the QJ314 MA four-point bearing suitable for?

Design engineers primarily use this four-point bearing where axial loads acting from both sides need to be accommodated in a confined space. Typical applications include bearing arrangements with varying axial forces, often in direct combination with a separate radial bearing. Thanks to the split inner ring, the bearing can be fitted with a high number of balls during assembly, which increases its axial load-carrying capacity.

What are the advantages of the split inner ring and the brass cage?

The two-piece inner ring allows the outer ring, together with the ball set, and the inner ring halves to be fitted separately, which simplifies assembly on the 70 mm shaft. At the same time, the brass cage offers dimensional stability under thermal stress in the range from –30 to +150 degrees. As this is an open bearing without sealing washers, the design requires external sealing as well as a continuous supply of lubricant within the housing.

What are the dimensions of the QJ314 MA four-point bearing?

The four-point bearing has an inside diameter of 70 mm, an outside diameter of 150 mm and a width of 35 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standardised main dimensions of the QJ3 series. When designing the assembly, ensure that suitable contact shoulders and shaft seats are provided to distribute the bearing’s load-carrying capacity evenly across its entire circumference.

What does the design with a split inner ring mean?

A split inner ring consists of two separate ring halves. This design allows more rolling elements to be incorporated into the bearing, thereby increasing its axial load-carrying capacity. Furthermore, this means that the bearing is not self-retaining: during assembly, you can fit the outer ring with the ball cage and the two inner ring halves separately onto the shaft and into the housing.

What do the tolerance classes P6 and P5 mean for the QJ314 MA four-point bearing?

This specification indicates a higher degree of accuracy than the standard tolerance. The dimensional accuracy corresponds to Class P6, whilst the running accuracy, in accordance with Class P5, is subject to even tighter tolerances. This reduces runout errors during operation, promotes low-vibration running and is therefore suitable for precisely guided shafts in demanding industrial applications.

Why does the QJ314 MA four-point bearing not have an integrated seal?

As an open bearing, this design is intended for use in oil- or grease-lubricated housings where the lubricant can circulate freely. Sealing against dirt and moisture is provided by external shaft seals or labyrinth seals within the surrounding housing structure. This allows for flexible relubrication schemes and simplifies lubricant monitoring.

What is the operating temperature range for this bearing?

The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. The integrated brass cage retains its mechanical strength and guiding properties within this range. To ensure trouble-free operation, it must be ensured that the selected lubricant and the external housing seal are also approved for the prevailing operating temperature.

When is a four-point bearing chosen instead of two angular contact ball bearings?

A four-point bearing accommodates axial forces in both directions, but requires significantly less installation space in the axial direction than a pair of single-row angular contact ball bearings. It therefore serves as a space-saving solution in gearbox and mechanical engineering where shafts need to be guided precisely in the axial direction and the available installation space is limited in width.
