The 6404-C3 deep groove ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings, with dimensions of 20x72x19 mm and a C3 clearance, offers a tried-and-tested solution for radial loads.
The 6404-C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing to standard tolerance class P0/PN, manufactured from standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6. FAG has designed this model for applications in which predominantly radial forces and moderate axial forces are present. Thanks to its design with deep raceways, the integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements at a uniform distance. With dimensions of 20 mm bore, 72 mm outside diameter and 19 mm width, the design meets common requirements in industrial mechanical engineering and for repairs.
This single-row bearing primarily accommodates high radial loads as well as axial forces in both directions. The open design is intended for installation environments where an existing lubrication system or a sealed housing provides the lubricant supply. The component covers an operating temperature range from –30 to +120 degrees.
With an outside diameter of 72 mm and a bore diameter of 20 mm, the 6404 series features a robust cross-section. Compared to narrower series, this wall thickness ensures reliable force transmission under demanding operating conditions in mechanical engineering.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance between the rolling elements and raceways compensates for thermal expansion caused by heat build-up during operation. When the inner and outer rings are constricted by tight fits, the C3 clearance prevents the bearing from seizing.
As no sealing washers are fitted by the manufacturer, the component runs with low friction in direct contact with the external lubricant.
With a bore of 20 mm, an external diameter of 72 mm and a width of 19 mm, this version complies with the standardised key dimensions of the 6404 series for standardised bearing seats in mechanical engineering.
The designation C3 indicates increased internal radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. The clearance between the outer ring, the balls and the inner ring provides a margin to accommodate thermal expansion or tight fits, ensuring that the bearing runs freely even when temperature differences occur.
The specified temperature range is between -30 and +120 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed for this range, although the chosen lubricant also helps to determine the actual limit during continuous operation.
The open design, which does not use sealing washers, ensures minimal rotational resistance without friction losses. This design is used when a sealed housing is in place or when lubrication is provided via an external circuit.
A robust sheet steel cage is fitted to maintain a uniform spacing between the rolling elements. Sheet steel offers a low weight whilst providing solid mechanical strength and is suitable for normal speed and temperature ranges.
This version is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (standard tolerance, comparable to ABEC 1). This accuracy class meets the usual requirements in general mechanical engineering and offers reliable concentricity on both the shaft and the housing.
