With dimensions of 20x72x19 mm, the FAG 6404 deep-groove ball bearing provides a robust bearing solution for predominantly radial loads in mechanical engineering.
The FAG 6404 single-row deep-groove ball bearing is an open rolling bearing made from conventional standard bearing steel (100Cr6). The ratio of the 20 mm bore diameter to the 72 mm outer diameter gives this bearing a distinctly thick-walled cross-section. The design primarily accommodates high radial forces as well as axial forces in both directions. A guided sheet steel cage maintains the rolling elements at a uniform distance and ensures low-vibration operation under standard operating conditions.
In general mechanical engineering, the 6404 deep groove ball bearing is primarily used in mechanical drives and mechanisms where comparatively high radial forces need to be absorbed on a small shaft diameter. Due to its open design without integrated sealing washers, installation in enclosed housings is recommended, where continuous oil or grease lubrication is provided and there is no risk of contamination.
With this bearing, designers and maintenance engineers should pay particular attention to environmental influences and the lubrication concept. As the 6404 deep groove ball bearing is of an open design, the housing requires external sealing against dust and moisture. The standard radial bearing clearance is designed for typical fit conditions and moderate operating temperatures between –30 and +120 degrees.
The 6404 deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 20 mm, an outer diameter of 72 mm and a width across flats of 19 mm. Due to its large outer diameter in relation to the bore, it belongs to a particularly robust series of bearings capable of withstanding high transverse forces.
As an open ball bearing, this design does not feature any sealing lips or cover plates that could cause abrasion. This means that no additional friction losses are generated within the bearing as a result of sealing elements. Lubricants such as oil or grease can reach the rolling elements unhindered, which is why the component is preferably operated in clean, sealed housings with their own sealing arrangements.
The designation P0 (also known as standard tolerance PN or ABEC 1) refers to the standardised manufacturing accuracy for rolling bearings. It defines the permissible deviations for bore diameter, outer diameter and concentricity. For the vast majority of general industrial applications, this precision class provides the appropriate fit for standard-compliant bearing seats on shafts and in housings.
The component is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The rings and rolling elements, made from roller bearing steel (100Cr6), as well as the integrated sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. It is also essential for operation to use a lubricant that is approved for these temperatures.
The normal radial bearing clearance refers to the standard internal clearance between the outer ring, rolling elements and inner ring when the bearing is in its unassembled state. It ensures that, once fitted, the bearing rotates smoothly under normal operating temperatures without being subjected to excessive stress.
The sheet steel cage guides the spherical rolling elements at regular intervals along the raceway. It prevents the balls from coming into direct contact with one another, thereby reducing friction and heat build-up. Furthermore, sheet steel is characterised by its mechanical resistance to many lubricants and common operating temperatures.
