The SKF 6338 M deep groove ball bearing, measuring 190x400x78 mm and featuring a brass cage, provides a robust bearing solution for large industrial machinery.
The SKF 6338 M single-row deep groove ball bearing, as an open rolling bearing, can accommodate high radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this large bearing is characterised by its robust design, featuring a 190 mm bore, a 400 mm outer diameter and a width of 78 mm. In many industrial installations, this model is used where heavy shafts need to be supported. The design, which has no flange or groove on the outer ring, facilitates cylindrical housing mounting.
Heavy machinery designs require bearings capable of withstanding high mechanical stresses. Thanks to its substantial dimensions, this bearing is suitable for industrial shaft support systems subject to high radial forces and axial loads on both sides. As this is an open bearing, it can be integrated directly into lubrication circuits using oil or grease. At operating temperatures between –20 and +150 degrees, the rolling bearing steel used retains its dimensional stability and ensures consistent concentricity.
The suffix ‘M’ denotes the solid brass cage, which guides the rolling elements with precision. Compared to standard sheet steel cages, brass withstands higher levels of vibration and shock loads, which promotes continuous operation in large bearings. Furthermore, the bearing has a standard radial clearance and complies with tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1). Before installation, adjust the fits of the shaft and housing to this standard tolerance to avoid excessive loss of clearance.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 190 mm, an external diameter of 400 mm and a width of 78 mm. These dimensions define the required installation space. When designing the assembly, ensure that the shaft seat and housing bore are precisely dimensioned to these specifications.
The letter M denotes a solid brass cage. A brass cage maintains the balls’ positional stability even under severe vibrations or fluctuating speeds. Compared with simpler sheet-metal cages, it offers greater mechanical strength and is suitable for demanding applications in large drives.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated seals or cover plates. This design allows lubricants such as gear oil or housing grease to circulate freely around the rolling elements and dissipate heat. This requires an external housing seal to prevent the ingress of dirt particles and moisture.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the brass cage retain their mechanical properties within this temperature range. Ensure that the externally supplied lubricant is suitable for the actual operating temperature of the machine in question.
This model features standard radial bearing clearance. This standard bearing clearance provides a good balance between low friction and stable shaft guidance under typical fit specifications and normal operating temperatures. In the event of extreme thermal loads, it is advisable to calculate the resulting operating clearance in advance.
This SKF bearing complies with the standard tolerance class P0/PN, which is also classified internationally as ABEC 1. This manufacturing precision meets the standard requirements in general mechanical engineering and ensures a precise fit on cylindrically machined shafts and in standard housing bores.
