The SKF 6317 deep groove ball bearing, with a bore of 85 mm and an outside diameter of 180 mm, provides a robust bearing solution for high radial loads.
The 6317 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing in an open design, conforming to standard tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1). Manufactured from 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel in the SKF Explorer design, this construction primarily accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. As the bearing has neither cover plates nor sealing rings, lubricant reaches the rolling elements and raceways unimpeded. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the balls evenly at operating temperatures between –20 and +120 degrees.
This rolling bearing is primarily used in rotating shaft mountings, gearbox units and industrial powertrains. It is suitable for environments where an external housing seal is present and continuous oil lubrication or relubrication takes place. The open design, without abiding sealing elements, facilitates unimpeded lubricant flow and helps to maintain a stable operating temperature even under continuous load.
The open design without sealing discs allows for the free choice of lubricant and facilitates integration into existing lubrication circuits. As there are no sealing lips rubbing against the rotating inner ring, this rolling bearing operates with minimal frictional resistance. The version with standard radial bearing clearance is suitable for standard fits without excessive temperature differences between the shaft and housing. Before assembly, the dimensions of 85 mm inner diameter, 180 mm outer diameter and 41 mm width must be checked.
With an internal diameter of 85 mm, an external diameter of 180 mm and a width of 41 mm, the bearing has standardised main dimensions. The outer ring has neither a flange nor a ring groove. These dimensions allow for a precise fit when installed in standardised bearing housings and on corresponding shaft seats.
The open design, which has no integrated seals, allows the rolling elements to be lubricated directly using external lubricants such as oil or grease. This eliminates friction losses caused by sealing lips coming into contact with the bearing. An external housing seal is required to protect the bearing from dirt and moisture.
Standard radial bearing clearance refers to the internal radial clearance of the balls between the inner and outer rings as supplied. This design is intended for typical fit selections and standard operating temperatures. It prevents the rolling elements from seizing up, whilst not allowing excessive clearance in the system.
The 6317 roller bearing, made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage, is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees. Within this range, the material retains its strength and dimensional stability. The actual operating limit also depends on the thermal stability of the lubricant used.
Tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1) defines the standard running and dimensional accuracy for industrial bearings. It specifies the permissible deviations in bore diameter, outer diameter and concentricity for conventional mechanical engineering. This accuracy class is suitable for standard shaft seats in industrial applications.
The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements at a uniform distance apart and minimises contact between the balls. It combines a low weight with mechanical stability under impact loads. Furthermore, it is resistant to common industrial lubricants within the permissible temperature range.
