The SKF 6301 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row radial ball bearing measuring 12 × 37 × 12 mm, designed for a wide range of industrial applications.
The 6301 deep groove ball bearing is one of the most commonly used single-row rolling bearings for rotating shafts. With a bore of 12 mm, an outside diameter of 37 mm and a width of 12 mm, this design primarily withstands radial loads. The groove geometry also allows axial loads to be transmitted in both directions. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and fitted with a sheet steel cage, the SKF Explorer version is suitable for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees.
This rolling bearing is predominantly used in shaft mountings that absorb radial forces at moderate speeds. The design has proven its worth in general mechanical engineering and equipment manufacturing for compact shaft diameters. As the outer ring has no flange or groove, the bearing can be press-fitted flush into cylindrical housing bores. The standard radial bearing clearance provides sufficient operating clearance for use under normal operating conditions.
As an open bearing, the component has no integrated sealing washers. Lubricants reach the rolling elements and raceways unimpeded, allowing flexible lubrication via an oil circuit or external lubrication points. This design requires a clean installation environment or external housing seals to prevent the ingress of dirt particles. With tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), the bearing complies with standardised specifications for industrial applications.
The single-row deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 12 mm, an outer diameter of 37 mm and a width of 12 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable a precise fit on shafts with a 12 mm bore and in housing bores with a diameter of 37 mm.
An open roller bearing lacks integrated cover plates or sealing discs. This provides direct access to the rolling elements and raceways, allowing the component to be lubricated flexibly with grease or oil via the surrounding machinery system. At the same time, their use requires a protected environment or external housing seals to prevent contamination.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the standard internal radial clearance between the balls and raceways when the bearing is unmounted. This clearance compensates for the typical reduction in clearance that occurs when the inner ring is pressed onto the shaft and provides sufficient space for the thermal expansion of the bearing components during normal operation.
The permissible operating range is from -20 to +120 degrees. This range is determined by the material properties of the standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage. To ensure correct operation, a lubricant suitable for this temperature range must be selected.
A cage made of pressed sheet steel keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance apart and prevents them from coming into contact with one another. It is characterised by its low weight combined with high strength. Furthermore, sheet steel is resistant to common mineral and synthetic lubricants.
Classification in tolerance class P0 corresponds to class ABEC 1. It defines the permissible dimensional and running tolerances for diameter, width and concentricity. This class is the standard in industrial mechanical engineering and covers typical requirements for shaft and housing fits.
