The FAG 6218 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 90 × 160 × 30 mm, features an open design suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.
The 6218 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing manufactured by FAG from standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6. It primarily withstands radial loads and supports the shaft in both directions, even under moderate axial forces. With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm, this design complies with standardised dimensions used in industrial mechanical engineering and plant construction.
This rolling bearing is typically used in industrial drives, housing bearings and rotating assemblies. Designers use the open design primarily in enclosed housing systems where oil circulation lubrication or a centralised lubrication system is in place. Thanks to the 100Cr6 material and the sheet steel cage, the component is designed for use in a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove.
As the bearing is designed without integrated lip seals or cover plates, the lubricant reaches the raceways and rolling elements directly. This reduces frictional resistance during operation. The guided sheet steel cage keeps the balls at a uniform distance apart and contributes to smooth running. When designing the assembly, it is important to ensure that open bearings are protected from dirt particles and moisture by the surrounding housing structure.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in shape and has neither a flange nor a groove. Thanks to these standard dimensions, the bearing fits into appropriately sized bearing seats.
The standard radial bearing clearance, often referred to as CN, describes the theoretical radial clearance of the components prior to installation. It is designed to ensure that, once the bearing has been pressed onto the shaft and into the housing, a suitable operating clearance remains, provided that standard fits and operating temperatures are observed.
The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The integrated sheet steel cage and the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel contribute to high dimensional stability across this entire range. The lubricant used must always be suited to the actual operating temperature.
Unlike factory-sealed bearings, this variant is not pre-filled with grease. Lubrication is provided externally via the surrounding system, for example by means of an oil bath, a circulating lubrication system or targeted greasing during assembly. The open design allows the lubricant to be replaced without hindrance.
The product is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. This represents the standardised accuracy class for industrial bearings. It offers proven smooth running and tight dimensional stability for most applications in general mechanical engineering.
