The SKF deep groove ball bearing 6218 -2Z/C3 (90x160x30 mm) features sheet metal shields on both sides and an increased C3 bearing clearance, making it suitable for industrial drives subject to thermal stress.
The 6218 -2Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing from SKF designed to accommodate radial and moderate axial loads in both directions. With key dimensions of a 90 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter and 30 mm width, this design is suitable for medium to heavy-duty shaft mountings. The design, made from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel with a sheet steel cage, is characterised by high dimensional stability and smooth running during continuous industrial operation.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians primarily use this bearing size in rotating industrial drives and mechanical assemblies subject to continuous loads. As deep-groove ball bearings of this design allow high speeds whilst maintaining stable guidance, they are used in a wide range of applications within mechanical drive trains. Thanks to the cylindrical outer ring without a flange or groove, the component can be fitted directly into standardised housing bores.
The cover plates on both sides, indicated by the designation 2Z, protect the bearing interior from coarse dirt particles without causing additional friction or wear on the sealing lip. The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees. The slightly increased C3 radial bearing clearance serves to compensate for temperature-induced expansion of the shaft or tight fits, ensuring that the rolling elements do not become stressed even when the bearing is operating at high temperatures.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised dimensions of the metric 62 series for single-row radial deep-groove ball bearings.
Sheet steel cover plates integrated on both sides protect the interior of the bearing from the ingress of solid contaminants, but do not come into mechanical contact with the inner ring. As a result, the frictional torque remains low compared with rubber seals that come into contact with the inner ring.
The increased radial clearance (C3) provides additional clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways. This clearance is advantageous when tight fits cause the inner ring to expand, or when significant temperature differences between the shaft and the housing need to be compensated for during operation.
The specified temperature range is between -20 and +120 degrees. This covers typical ambient and operating temperatures in industrial drives and manufacturing plant.
The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0, which corresponds to standard tolerance PN or class ABEC 1. It therefore meets the standard accuracy requirements of general mechanical engineering for cylindrical bearing seats on shafts and in housings.
The raceways and rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel of grade 100Cr6. This through-hardened material offers high fatigue strength and wear resistance under rolling loads, whilst the cage is made from pressed sheet steel.
