The FAG 6003 -2Z-C3 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 17x35x10 mm, features cover plates on both sides and is suitable for elevated operating temperatures.
The 6003 -2Z-C3 deep-groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing for a wide range of industrial and workshop applications. FAG manufactures this rolling bearing from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel with the compact main dimensions of a 17 mm bore, 35 mm outside diameter and 10 mm width. A robust sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly into the deep raceways. With tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and no flange or groove on the outer ring, the unit can be fitted directly into cylindrical housing bores.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians primarily use this bearing type in rotating shaft arrangements and compact assemblies. Due to its design, the bearing primarily absorbs radial forces as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. The design covers a temperature range from –30 to +120 degrees, making it suitable for industrial drives as well as for DIY repair projects. Even under varying operating conditions, the bearing runs with low vibration.
The suffix -2Z denotes sheet metal cover plates on both sides. These gap covers protect the bearing’s interior from coarse particles, but generate hardly any frictional heat compared to abrasive rubber seals. The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance compensates for thermal expansion caused by heat build-up during operation and prevents internal stresses. Before installation, it is advisable to check whether the fits on the 17 mm shaft are compatible with this bearing clearance.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 17 mm, an external diameter of 35 mm and a total width of 10 mm. These dimensions comply with the standardised 6003 series. Thanks to its cylindrical fit without a flange or circumferential groove, the assembly can be fitted cleanly onto shafts and into housing bores.
C3 denotes a radial bearing clearance that is slightly greater than the standard clearance. This means that, when the bearing is in its unassembled state, there is greater radial clearance between the balls and the raceways. This serves to compensate for dimensional changes caused by thermal expansion during operation or by tight fits on the shaft and housing.
The suffix 2Z or ZZ refers to cover plates made of sheet steel fitted on both sides. They act as a non-contact gap cover, preventing foreign matter from entering and retaining the lubricant within the bearing. As there is no frictional contact with the inner ring, the starting torque remains low and this design is suitable for higher speeds.
The permissible operating range is from -30 to +120 degrees. Within this temperature range, the standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensionally stable geometry. For applications involving high heat generation, the C3 bearing clearance also helps to reduce thermally induced stresses in the bearing seat.
The outer and inner rings, as well as the balls, are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The cage is made from pressed sheet steel. Manufacturing is carried out to tolerance class P0 or standard tolerance (corresponding to ABEC 1), which meets the dimensional accuracy requirements for common machine and equipment manufacturing applications.
Open deep-groove ball bearings have no cover whatsoever, meaning that dirt can penetrate unhindered and external sealing of the assembly is required. The version with 2Z cover plates protects the system against dust and swarf on both sides as standard. This reduces the need for external sealing during unit assembly.
