The SKF 16044 /C3 deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 220 × 340 × 37 mm and increased clearance (C3), provides a robust bearing solution for industrial drives subject to thermal stress.
The 16044 /C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing from SKF that primarily accommodates radial loads as well as moderate axial forces. With a bore of 220 mm, an outside diameter of 340 mm and a narrow width of 37 mm, it is one of the particularly space-saving large bearings. The rings and rolling elements are made from standard rolling-bearing steel 100Cr6. A guided sheet-steel cage keeps the balls at a uniform distance apart and ensures orderly guidance within a temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
This single-row deep-groove ball bearing is particularly well-suited to large-scale industrial applications where shafts with a diameter of 220 mm are supported. Design engineers make specific use of the narrow cross-sectional height combined with a large outer diameter of 340 mm for installation spaces with limited axial width. As this is an open bearing without integrated seals, it can be integrated directly into oil circulation or centralised lubrication systems. The bearing supports radial loads and guides the shaft axially in both directions.
The C3 designation indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared to the standard when the bearing is unmounted. This additional radial clearance compensates for thermal expansion that can occur between the shaft and housing at operating temperatures of up to +150 degrees Celsius. The C3 classification also counteracts stress on the rolling elements when tight press fits on the shaft reduce the radial clearance after assembly. This ensures the bearing continues to run smoothly and helps protect the raceways against premature fatigue. During installation, care must be taken to ensure a clean external housing seal to prevent the ingress of dirt.
This model has an internal bore of 220 mm, an external diameter of 340 mm and a width of 37 mm. Thanks to its flat design, it is suitable for shaft designs that require a large bore diameter whilst maintaining a narrow axial housing width. The rings and rolling elements are precisely matched to one another.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased internal radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This clearance is required when tight fits are selected during assembly or when significant temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings during operation. It prevents the rolling elements from seizing up under the influence of heat.
Open roller bearings offer the advantage that lubricants such as lubricating oils or greases can circulate freely and flush the bearing element. However, they require an external housing seal to protect the bearing from dust, moisture and foreign particles. Furthermore, the open design facilitates relubrication and visual inspection of the raceways.
Continuous operation is permitted within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The integrated sheet steel cage and the standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel retain their dimensional stability within these limits. To ensure reliable operation, it must be verified that the selected lubricant is approved for the entire prevailing temperature range.
Manufacturing is carried out in accordance with the standard tolerance class ‘Normal’, also referred to as P0, PN or ABEC 1. This tolerance class reliably meets the standard accuracy requirements of general mechanical engineering and drive technology. It defines precise fit dimensions for cylindrical bearing seats on shafts and in housing bores.
A sturdy sheet steel cage is used. This keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance and separates the balls from one another. Sheet steel cages are characterised by their low weight, good lubricant permeability and high resistance to lubricant additives within the permissible temperature range.
