The FAG 16018 deep-groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 90 × 140 × 16 mm, offers a narrow design for radial loads.
The 16018 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing conforming to standard specifications. With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 140 mm and a width of just 16 mm, this type is one of the narrowest rolling bearings available. The manufacturer, FAG, produces this model from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. It primarily withstands radial loads, guides the shaft and is suitable for designs with limited axial installation space.
Design engineers typically choose the 16018 deep groove ball bearing when there is only a limited installation width available in relation to the shaft diameter. Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering and in compact industrial drives. In addition to predominantly radial forces, the bearing also accommodates axial guidance forces in both directions. The design without a groove or flange on the outer ring allows for straightforward installation in cylindrical-bore housings.
As an open rolling bearing, this design has no integrated sealing washers. This means you can choose the lubricant – whether grease or circulating oil – to suit your operating requirements. The guided sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements spaced apart and withstands temperatures from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the standard radial bearing clearance and tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), you can integrate the bearing into standard fit systems, provided the housing provides external protection against the ingress of contaminants.
This roller bearing has an inner diameter of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 140 mm and a narrow width of 16 mm. This cross-sectional ratio makes it suitable for bearing locations where, despite a relatively large shaft diameter, there is only limited radial and axial installation space within the housing.
Tolerance class P0 corresponds to the standard tolerance PN and the international classification ABEC 1. It defines the permissible dimensional, form and running deviations for the inner and outer rings. For the vast majority of industrial drives and mechanical engineering applications, this standard offers a good balance between running accuracy and cost-effective manufacturing.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated seals or cover plates. This design minimises friction and allows them to be used in oil-lubricated systems, such as gearboxes, where the lubricating oil circulates freely through the bearing. This requires the housing to be sealed externally to prevent the escape of lubricant and the ingress of dirt.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. Rings and rolling elements made from fully hardened 100Cr6 roller bearing steel remain dimensionally stable within this range. Similarly, the fitted sheet steel cage operates without any mechanical impairment within this temperature range. When designing the bearing, you simply need to ensure that a temperature-resistant lubricant is used.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the standard radial clearance between the balls and the raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. It is dimensioned such that, once the inner ring has been pressed onto the shaft and the outer ring fitted into the housing, the required operating clearance for smooth running is maintained.
