The FAG 6214-C3 single-row deep-groove ball bearing with a 70 mm bore offers increased bearing clearance for industrial applications subject to thermal stress.
As an open radial ball bearing, the 6214-C3 is one of the most versatile machine components for rotating shafts. The design, made from standard rolling-bearing steel 100Cr6, primarily absorbs radial forces and also guides shafts under axial loads in both directions. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements along the deep raceway of the inner and outer rings. With the standard tolerance P0, this bearing meets common industrial precision requirements in general mechanical engineering.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel opt for this size when mounting shafts with a 70 mm diameter at medium to high speeds. Typical applications include bearing arrangements subject to combined radial and axial loads, as well as operational heating. With a permissible temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees, this design is suitable for environments subject to high temperatures. The open profile, without integrated sealing washers, allows for direct lubrication with grease or lubricating oil via the housing design.
The C3 designation indicates a radial bearing clearance that is slightly greater than the standard clearance. This radial clearance compensates for thermal expansion that occurs during continuous operation between the bearing rings or due to tight fits on the shaft and housing. It helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming jammed due to thermal expansion. As no seals generate frictional heat, the open design promotes smooth running; however, it requires an external housing seal at the bearing location to protect against dirt particles.
The main dimensions are a bore diameter of 70 mm on the inner ring, an outer diameter of 125 mm on the outer ring and a width of 24 mm. The cylindrical outer ring has neither a flange nor a ring groove, which means the bearing can be press-fitted flush into standardised cylindrical housing bores.
The suffix C3 indicates a radial bearing clearance that exceeds the standard when the bearing is unmounted. This additional clearance between the balls and raceways is required when tight mounting fits or significant temperature differences between the inner and outer rings reduce the radial clearance during operation.
The inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The balls are guided by a sheet steel cage. The roller bearing has no electrically insulating coating and allows electrical currents to flow unimpeded between the inner and outer rings.
The permissible operating range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability of the steel components and the sheet metal cage is maintained within this range. For the practical service life, it is crucial to select a lubricant whose viscosity and thermal resistance are suited to the respective operating temperatures.
The open design, without sealing or cover plates, minimises frictional resistance and allows lubricating oil or grease to be replaced directly whilst the unit is in operation. However, this requires that the surrounding assembly protects the bearing from moisture and contaminants by means of external sealing elements such as shaft seals.
The bearing complies with standard tolerance class P0 (corresponding to PN per DIN and ABEC 1). This manufacturing accuracy meets the requirements of the vast majority of industrial applications, provided that the bearing seating surfaces on the shaft and in the housing are designed in accordance with the current ISO fit guidelines for standard ball bearings.
