The 16003 deep-groove ball bearing is a compact, open rolling bearing measuring 17 × 35 × 8 mm, designed for radial and axial loads.
The single-row deep-groove ball bearing 16003 from FAG accommodates radial forces as well as light axial guidance loads in both directions. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), this roller bearing is characterised by its narrow design, with a width of 8 mm, a bore of 17 mm and an outside diameter of 35 mm. It has a standard radial clearance and operates within tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. The component does not require integrated seals, resulting in minimal frictional resistance during operation.
Designs with limited axial installation space benefit from the bearing’s slim dimensions. The 16003 deep-groove ball bearing is primarily used in enclosed assemblies where a separate lubrication system is already in place. The single row guides the rolling elements stably at constant speeds. As there is neither a flange nor a ring groove on the outer ring to cause interference, the cylindrical outer ring fits flush into standardised housing bores.
Open roller bearings are supplied ex-works without sealing washers. In practice, this means that lubricants such as oil or grease can reach the raceways unhindered. At the same time, the design requires effective protection against dirt particles and moisture via the surrounding housing. The integrated sheet steel cage keeps the balls at a uniform distance apart and retains its shape within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. Before installation, check that the lubricant supply is suitable for your process.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 17 mm, an outside diameter of 35 mm and a narrow width of 8 mm. Both rings and the rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The outer ring is cylindrical with no groove or flange, which allows for clean installation in precisely fitted housing bores.
The standard radial bearing clearance provides the play, as specified by the manufacturer, between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. This clearance compensates for the usual interference fit on the shaft and moderate heating during operation, without causing the balls to become stressed or leading to premature wear.
As the bearing is manufactured without contact seals or cover plates, lubrication must be provided by the surrounding environment. This is usually achieved via an oil bath, oil circulation or a targeted grease fill within the housing. Open bearings allow for rapid lubricant replacement, but require external sealing elements on the housing wall to prevent the ingress of contaminants.
The permissible temperature range is from -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensionally stable components made from roller bearing steel and the robust sheet steel cage retain their strength within this temperature range. At higher operating temperatures, you must pay particular attention to the temperature resistance of the lubricating oil or grease used.
Classification in tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1) corresponds to the standard precision for industrial roller bearings. It defines the permissible dimensional, form and running deviations for the bore, outer diameter and concentricity. This tolerance class fully meets the requirements of most general mechanical engineering and drive applications.
The cage is made of sheet steel. This component maintains the rolling elements at a uniform distance, prevents the balls from coming into contact with one another and ensures an even load distribution. Sheet steel cages are resistant to common industrial lubricants and are designed for operation in a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees.
