Single-row deep-groove ball bearing 6220 -C4 from FAG Wälzlager with a 100 mm bore, 180 mm outer diameter and increased C4 clearance for thermally stressed industrial applications.
The 6220-C4 deep groove ball bearing from FAG primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. This single-row roller bearing is made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) and operates within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. Thanks to its open design without an integrated seal, lubricant can reach the raceways and balls unhindered. The guided sheet-steel cage maintains the correct spacing between the rolling elements and ensures smooth running under demanding operating conditions in mechanical engineering.
Design engineers primarily select the 6220-C4 deep groove ball bearing for shaft diameters of 100 mm, where significant heating occurs during operation. Typical areas of application include systems with high operating temperatures or temperature differences between the shaft and housing. Thanks to its open design, the bearing is suitable for oil-lubricated systems or housings with on-site sealing. The component accommodates combined radial and axial loads and can be integrated into enclosed assemblies.
The internal C4 clearance is greater than the standard clearance of normal radial ball bearings. It compensates for thermal expansion between the shaft and housing when the inner ring becomes warmer than the outer ring during operation. Even tight fits reduce the operating clearance after press-fitting. The C4 clearance helps to reduce bearing stresses and premature wear caused by thermal effects. For applications with low thermal expansion, however, a version with standard clearance or C3 is usually recommended.
The 6220-C4 deep-groove ball bearing has a bore of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 34 mm. These key dimensions determine the bearing’s size. The cylindrical outer ring has neither a groove nor a flange, which means the rolling bearing can be fitted with a precise fit into flat housing bores.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance. The internal clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways is greater than in the standard version and in the C3 class. This increased bearing clearance prevents the rolling elements from jamming when thermal differences occur between the inner and outer rings or when tight fits are specified.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel and fitted with a sheet steel cage, the component is optimised for this temperature range. The maximum temperature that can actually be used during operation also depends on the lubricant selected and the conditions of the surrounding seal.
As an open bearing, this design has no integrated seals or cover plates. Lubricating oil or grease from an external lubrication system can circulate freely and cool the rolling elements and raceways. In clean housings, the non-contact design results in low friction losses, but requires an external housing seal to protect against dirt and moisture.
This roller bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to ABEC 1. This standard tolerance meets the usual requirements for concentricity and dimensional accuracy in general mechanical engineering. It enables a defined fit design for the shaft and bearing housing.
The bearing features a sheet steel cage which maintains a uniform spacing between the rolling elements. Sheet steel cages are characterised by their low weight, mechanical stability and resistance to lubricants and operating temperatures of up to 150 degrees. They are a common design for single-row deep groove ball bearings.
