The SKF 4308 ATN9 double-row deep groove ball bearing, with a 40 mm bore and a polyamide cage, provides a robust bearing solution for combined loads.
Thanks to its two rows of balls, the SKF 4308 ATN9 double-row deep groove ball bearing can accommodate higher radial loads than single-row variants with the same bore. With dimensions of 40 mm inner diameter, 90 mm outer diameter and a width of 33 mm, this rolling bearing is suitable for compact installation spaces subject to increased loads. The rings and rolling elements are made of standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). As an open bearing, this design can be flexibly integrated into existing lubrication systems.
Design engineers opt for this double-row bearing when single-row deep groove ball bearings reach their load-carrying capacity limits, but the installation space does not require a roller bearing. The bearing primarily transmits radial forces, but also supports axial forces in both directions. Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering, in gearboxes or on pump shafts. As the outer ring has no flange or groove, it can be easily slid into cylindrical housing bores.
The suffix ATN9 denotes a polyamide cage. Polyamide cages are characterised by their low mass and quiet operation. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius. The standard radial clearance (CN) and the standard tolerance P0 (ABEC 1) are sufficient for common fits at moderate operating temperatures. As the bearing is unsealed, a housing seal provided by the customer protects against dirt and lubricant loss.
The double-row deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a height or width of 33 mm. The outer ring has a smooth cylindrical shape without a flange or retaining groove, making it straightforward to install in cylindrical mounting bores.
The designation ATN9 refers to the bearing’s cage design. It consists of a polyamide cage that keeps the two rows of balls spaced apart. Compared with sheet steel cages, this material reduces the weight and minimises running noise during operation.
The double-row design almost doubles the number of load-bearing balls for the same axial length. This increases the radial load capacity compared with single-row deep-groove ball bearings of the same bore size. Furthermore, the geometry of the raceways accommodates axial guidance loads from both directions.
The bearing is designed for ambient temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. This limit is primarily determined by the thermal behaviour of the polyamide cage. When selecting a lubricant, users should ensure that the grease or oil is specified for the same temperature range.
Yes, because as an open bearing, this variant does not have any integrated seals or cover plates. During assembly, it must be filled with a suitable rolling-element bearing grease or supplied via an oil lubrication system. Furthermore, the design requires external housing seals to protect against dirt and moisture.
This roller bearing complies with the standard tolerance class P0 (equivalent to ABEC 1) and has standard clearance (radial bearing clearance CN). It is suitable for conventional manufacturing tolerances on the shaft and housing, provided that no exceptional temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation.
