The FAG 6220 -Z-C3 deep-groove ball bearing, with a 100 mm bore, sheet metal cover and C3 clearance, offers stable operation under thermal stress.
The 6220 -Z-C3 deep-groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from standard rolling-element steel (100Cr6) with a cylindrical bore. The design accommodates high radial loads as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. Thanks to the sheet steel cage and the outer ring without a flange or groove, this rolling bearing fits precisely into cylindrical housing bores. The combination of a single-sided sheet metal cover and tolerance class P0/PN ensures low-vibration operation in industrial drives.
Typical applications for this size include rotating drive shafts and bearing locations in mechanical engineering where combined radial and axial forces occur. Design engineers prefer to use this bearing at mounting points where one side needs to remain protected from contamination, whilst the open opposite side is supplied with lubricant via the interior of the housing. Thanks to its dimensions of 100 mm internal diameter and 180 mm external diameter, this design performs well in applications involving continuous rotational movement.
The suffixes define specific properties for demanding installation conditions. The ‘Z’ suffix denotes a non-contacting cover plate made of sheet steel on one side of the bearing, which minimises friction losses and prevents lubricant leakage. The designation C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance. This additional radial clearance compensates for temperature-induced expansion of the shaft or fit oversizes when the inner ring is pressed on, without the bearing becoming stressed during operation.
This roller bearing has a bore of 100 mm, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a width across flats of 34 mm. The outer ring has no flange or groove and sits flush with cylindrical housing bores.
The Z-cover is made of profiled sheet steel and seals the bearing against one end face without coming into contact with it. This protects the raceway from falling dirt particles but, unlike abrasive rubber seals, does not generate any additional frictional torque. The uncovered side continues to allow unimpeded access of lubricant from inside the housing.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This is designed to prevent the rolling elements from becoming jammed should temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings during operation. This radial clearance also compensates for the narrowing of the raceway caused by tight fits on the shaft.
The rolling elements and the inner and outer rings are manufactured from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material is characterised by its dimensional stability and fatigue strength. The balls are guided by a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage, which keeps the weight of the rotating components low and aids the distribution of the lubricant.
The bearing complies with tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 standard by international standards. This standard tolerance fully meets the common requirements of the mechanical and plant engineering sectors in terms of dimensional accuracy, concentricity and axial run-out, and facilitates the design of suitable bearing seats on shafts and in housings.
