The FAG NU228 -E-M1 single-row cylindrical roller bearing, with main dimensions of 140 × 250 × 42 mm, is designed to accommodate high radial loads as a separable idler bearing.
The NU228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row radial roller bearing from FAG designed for industrial applications. With a bore of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width of 42 mm, this open rolling bearing guides cylindrical rollers via fixed flanges on the outer ring. The inner ring has no flanges and can be removed from either side. This allows the bearing arrangement to compensate directly within the bearing for axial changes in the shaft length.
The NU228 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is particularly suitable for bearing arrangements in general mechanical engineering and in gearboxes that require high radial loads. As it functions purely as a non-locating bearing, it does not absorb any axial forces, but compensates for thermal linear expansion of the shaft with low friction.
Applications include mechanical drives subject to high radial loads. The brass cage is suitable for environments subject to vibrations and acceleration forces. When combined with a fixed bearing on the opposite side, it forms a functional shaft guide.
The NU design allows the inner and outer rings to be fitted separately, which facilitates installation in cases of tight fits. The solid brass cage M1 guides the cylindrical rollers and is designed for a temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees.
As an open bearing without an integrated seal, the bearing requires external sealing as well as a suitable lubricant supply via the housing. The standard tolerance class P0 and normal radial clearance meet the common installation requirements of industrial practice.
In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed guide flanges, whilst the inner ring has no flanges. This allows the inner ring to be moved axially in both directions and removed. The bearing functions purely as a non-locating bearing, transmitting only radial forces and compensating for axial shaft expansion without causing internal stress within the bearing.
This roller bearing has an inside diameter of 140 mm, an outside diameter of 250 mm and a width across flats of 42 mm. It is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. These dimensions are decisive for the design of the connecting structure between the shaft and the housing bore.
The suffix M1 denotes a solid brass cage which guides the rollers and keeps them at a distance. Brass offers high strength and dimensional stability. This type of cage is suitable for operating conditions involving high levels of vibration or dynamic acceleration.
As the design is open and does not have its own sealing washers, protection against dirt and moisture must be provided by the surrounding bearing housing. The lubricant – either grease or oil, depending on the operating concept – is also applied externally, as the outer ring has no lubrication groove or lubrication bore of its own.
The permissible operating range is between -30 and +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability of the rings and rolling elements, as well as the durability of the brass cage, enable operation within this range. When designing the bearing arrangement, care must be taken to select a lubricant that also covers these temperature limits.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance, which is designed to suit the vast majority of industrial operating conditions. The bearing clearance refers to the radial play between the rollers and the raceways when the bearing is unloaded. With standard fits and at normal operating temperatures, this type of bearing ensures smooth running.
