The SKF NU224 ECM/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a separable idler bearing with a brass cage and increased C3 clearance, designed for a 120 mm shaft diameter.
The SKF NU224 ECM/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is designed as a single-row rolling bearing for high radial loads. Thanks to its optimised internal design and key dimensions – a 120 mm bore, 215 mm outside diameter and 40 mm width – this bearing can accommodate considerable radial loads. The solid brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers under demanding operating conditions. As this is an open bearing without seal washers, lubrication is supplied via the surrounding housing structure.
In many industrial bearing arrangements, heat-induced changes in shaft length occur. The NU design serves as a floating bearing in such cases, as the inner ring is flangeless and can be removed from both sides. This allows the bearing to compensate for axial displacement between the shaft and housing without constraint within the bearing itself. Typical applications include bearing arrangements subject to high radial forces, where a separate fixed bearing provides axial guidance.
The design suffix ‘M’ refers to the solid brass cage, which is resistant to vibrations, shock loads and lubricant additives. The suffix ‘C3’ indicates a slightly increased radial clearance. This additional clearance compensates for operational heating or tight fits without the bearing becoming stressed. With a permissible temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees, this design meets the demanding thermal requirements of mechanical engineering.
With an internal diameter of 120 mm, an external diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions of the NU224 series. The dimensional accuracy is in the ‘Normal’ tolerance class (P0 or ABEC 1), whilst the running accuracy corresponds to the tighter P6 class (ABEC 3).
In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless. This allows the inner ring to be removed from both sides, which makes it easier to fit the rings onto the shaft and housing. The bearing acts purely as a non-locating bearing and absorbs only radial forces, whilst compensating for axial length changes.
The designation C3 indicates a radial clearance that is greater than the standard clearance (Normal). This is required when there are temperature differences between the inner and outer rings, or when tight fits reduce the operating clearance. The increased bearing clearance prevents internal stress and ensures that the cylindrical rollers run smoothly under thermal load.
The solid brass cage, identified by the abbreviation ‘M’, is characterised by high mechanical strength and good emergency running properties. It guides the rollers even under severe vibrations, varying loads or accelerations. Furthermore, brass is resistant to many aggressive lubricants and is suitable for demanding operating conditions.
As this bearing has no integrated seals, lubrication via the surrounding housing structure is required. Depending on the application, either greases or lubricating oils may be used. As the outer ring has neither a lubrication groove nor lubrication holes, the lubricant is fed directly into the rolling element chamber from the side.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees. Within these limits, the cage and rings retain their dimensional stability. When designing the bearing assembly, care must be taken to ensure that the lubricant used and any external sealing elements are also suitable for the intended operating temperature.
