The SKF 51103 axial deep-groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 17 × 30 × 9 mm, is designed to accommodate single-sided axial loads in mechanical engineering applications.
The 51103 axial deep groove ball bearing is a separable rolling bearing designed to accommodate purely axial loads. It consists of a shaft ring with a 17 mm bore, a housing ring with an outer diameter of 30 mm, and a guided set of balls. SKF manufactures this single-row axial bearing from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6) to the standard tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1). As the components can be fitted separately, the design facilitates step-by-step installation onto shafts and into bearing housings. The shaft ring, housing ring and cage assembly can be positioned independently of one another.
Design engineers use this bearing wherever axial forces act on the shaft exclusively from one direction. Typical applications include bearing arrangements where shafts need to be fixed axially in one direction. The component must not accommodate radial loads; therefore, users must support any transverse forces that arise using separate radial bearings. The overall height of 9 mm allows for compact designs in confined spaces.
This bearing is not angle-adjustable and is sensitive to misalignment between the shaft and the housing. A flat and perpendicular contact surface of the connecting parts relative to the axis of rotation is required to ensure that the rolling elements are supported evenly. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the balls during operation at temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. The product is designed for use without shims, so that the housing flange rests directly against a flat housing shoulder.
With an internal diameter of 17 mm at the shaft flange, an external diameter of 30 mm at the housing flange and a total width of 9 mm, the component complies with standardised dimensions. These dimensions allow for direct replacement in existing designs.
Due to their design, axial forces are absorbed exclusively from one direction, meaning that the shaft is supported on one side only. The bearing cannot transmit radial forces. In the case of combined loads, an additional radial bearing must therefore be provided on the same shaft.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees. This range is based on the dimensional stability of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage. When designing the system, users must also take into account the temperature limits of the lubricant used.
No, this design is not angle-adjustable. The connecting parts on the shaft and housing must be machined at right angles to the bearing axis. Misalignment or deflection will result in an uneven load distribution across the rolling elements and reduce the service life.
A lightweight sheet steel cage keeps the balls at a distance, guides the set of rolling elements and prevents direct contact between adjacent balls. This ensures smooth running along the entire raceway.
The scope of supply comprises solely the axial deep-groove ball bearing itself, consisting of a shaft ring, a housing ring and a ball-cage assembly. Spacers for spherical adjustment are not included, as the housing ring is mounted directly onto a flat contact surface.
