Axial Deep Groove Ball B. FAG 51116

The FAG 51116 single-direction axial deep-groove ball bearing, with a bore diameter of 80 mm, accommodates high axial forces in one direction.

The FAG 51116 axial deep-groove ball bearing is specially designed to accommodate purely axial loads in one direction. Manufactured from standard rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6), the separable assembly consists of a shaft ring, a housing ring and the guided ball and cage assembly. With a bore diameter of 80 mm, an outside diameter of 105 mm and a height of 19 mm, this design provides axially stable support for shafts; however, it must not be subjected to radial forces during operation.

In which applications is the 51116 axial deep-groove ball bearing used?

Designs in general mechanical engineering typically use this type in vertical or horizontal shaft lines where defined guiding forces act in a preferred direction. Typical applications are found in bearing arrangements that must exclusively accommodate axial loads. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly and allows operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. Thanks to the standard rolling bearing steel (100Cr6), the component retains its dimensional stability even under high loads.

What is important to consider when installing a bearing without angular adjustment?

The 51116 series is not angle-adjustable and is supplied without shims. During design and assembly, contact surfaces that are exactly coplanar and perpendicular to the shaft axis are required. Even minor misalignments or skewing lead to uneven load distribution across the balls, which accelerates wear. With tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1, the axial bearing fits precisely into suitable housing and shaft seats.

In which directions does the 51116 axial deep-groove ball bearing accommodate loads?

This design is intended exclusively for purely axial loads from a single direction. The bearing must not be subjected to radial forces; therefore, designs should incorporate a separate radial bearing for shaft support. An axial load in the opposite direction will cause the discs to lift off.

What are the main dimensions of bearing 51116?

The assembly has a bore diameter of 80 mm for the shaft, an outer diameter of 105 mm at the housing flange and a height of 19 mm. Both discs have slightly different fit dimensions to facilitate the separation between the rotating shaft side and the stationary housing side.

Can alignment errors be corrected during installation?

No, the 51116 model has flat discs and is not designed to allow for angular adjustment. The contact surfaces on the shaft and housing must be machined so that they are exactly at right angles to the axis of rotation. Otherwise, angular misalignment will cause the bearings to run on their edges and result in localised overloads on the rolling elements.

What is the permissible operating temperature range?

Thanks to the combination of 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and a sheet steel cage, the bearing is suitable for temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. The actual upper temperature limit during operation depends largely on the lubricating properties and temperature resistance of the selected grease or oil.

What is the bearing’s tolerance class?

The component complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. This classification offers a balanced combination of dimensional accuracy, concentricity and cost-effective assembly in conventional fits for general mechanical engineering.

What is the bearing cage made of?

A sheet steel cage is used inside. This keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance from one another, prevents them from coming into contact with one another and ensures low-friction guidance of the ball ring within the permissible temperature range.
