The SKF 7317 BECBM angular contact ball bearing, measuring 85 × 180 × 41 mm, accommodates combined radial and single-direction axial loads whilst maintaining high positioning accuracy.
The 7317 BECBM angular contact ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) in an open design. Thanks to the contact angle of 40 degrees, this design accommodates significant axial forces in one direction as well as simultaneously acting radial forces. The outer ring has neither a flange nor a groove. The Explorer version combines dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P6 with enhanced running accuracy to class P5 for demanding industrial applications.
The rolling bearing absorbs high axial forces in a defined direction and guides shafts precisely under combined loads. As a single angular contact ball bearing only absorbs axial loads in one direction, the bearing arrangement usually requires a second bearing mounted in the opposite direction. When mounted in pairs in an O or X arrangement, this bearing set has low axial play due to its design. This feature facilitates axial fixation within the overall system and promotes smooth running.
The solid brass cage guides the rolling elements with minimal vibration and offers high rigidity under dynamic operating conditions and during rapid changes in speed. The open design allows for flexible lubrication via the operational oil or grease circuit within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. As there are no integrated seals, the lubricant reaches the contact surfaces between the balls and the bearing raceways directly.
The design is based on a single-row configuration with a 40-degree contact angle and a solid construction. The raceways in the inner and outer rings are arranged in an axially offset manner. This geometry allows for the combined absorption of radial forces and single-sided axial forces whilst maintaining high stability.
With a bore of 85 mm for the shaft seat, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a width across flats of 41 mm, the bearing complies with standardised dimensions. The outer ring is cylindrical, without a flange or circumferential groove. These nominal dimensions must be taken into account precisely when designing the shaft and housing.
The nominal contact angle describes the line of force transmission between the rolling elements and the raceways relative to the radial plane. A contact angle of 40 degrees optimises the bearing’s ability to accommodate high axial loads. For predominantly axial loads, this angle provides stiffer guidance than variants with smaller contact angles.
This classification combines two accuracy grades for different bearing parameters. The P6 grade indicates tighter manufacturing tolerances for key dimensions, such as bore and diameter, compared with the standard value. The P5 tolerance class relates to concentricity, which helps to reduce vibrations and ensure smooth running at higher speeds.
To accommodate axial forces acting in both directions, two single-row angular contact ball bearings are fitted in pairs. When arranged in an O or X configuration, this variant results in a small, defined axial clearance due to its design. This facilitates the alignment of the assembly during installation and ensures a controlled preload in the operating clearance.
As the angular contact ball bearing is designed without integrated cover or sealing washers, it requires external lubrication using oil or grease. The permissible temperature range is from -20 to +150 degrees. The surrounding housing must be fitted with suitable external sealing elements to prevent the lubricant from escaping.
