The 3217 double-row angular contact ball bearing accommodates radial and axial loads on both sides and features compact dimensions of 85 × 150 × 49.2 mm.
The FAG 3217 angular contact ball bearing is a double-row radial rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel 100Cr6 for demanding industrial applications. Thanks to the internal arrangement of two rows of balls, this component supports radial loads and axial forces in both directions. The open design allows for targeted lubrication with oil or grease via the machine housing. With standard tolerance to P0/ABEC 1, the roller bearing fits precisely into standardised assemblies.
This double-row roller bearing is suitable for mounting positions where high radial forces are combined with axial loads on both sides. Designers frequently use the 32 series where two single-row bearings would require too much axial installation space. Typical applications include compact bearing arrangements in general machinery and equipment manufacturing with combined load profiles. As the bearing is open at both ends, operation requires a clean installation environment or an external housing seal to protect against dirt and moisture.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly and keeps the bearing’s own weight low. This cage design can withstand operating temperatures from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius, allowing the bearing to be used flexibly in thermally stressed areas of machinery. When designing the application, ensure that the standard radial clearance is maintained: it is designed for standard fits. As lubricant can circulate unhindered through the open end faces, this design facilitates effective heat dissipation within the housing lubrication system.
The main dimensions are 85 mm internal diameter (bore), 150 mm external diameter and 49.2 mm width. Thanks to this standardised ratio, the bearing fits into standardised housing bores and onto corresponding shaft seats. Before fitting, check the mating dimensions of the surrounding components to ensure a perfect fit and good concentricity.
Double-row angular contact ball bearings accommodate both radial and axial forces in both directions. The rows of balls are arranged at an angle to one another, similar to a pair of single-row angular contact ball bearings in an O-configuration. This design effectively counteracts tilting moments whilst requiring less axial installation space than two separately mounted individual bearings.
The open design, without integrated cover plates or sealing discs, allows for direct lubrication via central oil or grease lubrication systems within the machine. Lubricant can circulate freely around the raceways and dissipate the heat generated during operation. This design requires a protected bearing housing to prevent dirt particles and moisture from reaching the rolling elements.
Tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1) denotes the standard accuracy for industrial roller bearings. It defines the permissible dimensional and geometric deviations of the inner and outer rings. For common applications in mechanical engineering and drive technology, this tolerance class offers a suitable level of running accuracy.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. At continuous operating temperatures close to the upper limit, the selected lubricant should be thermally suited to these conditions.
The standard radial bearing clearance provides the operating clearance specified in the design for standard mounting conditions. It compensates for minimal heat-induced expansion of the shaft and housing, as well as the usual fit allowances when the bearing is pressed into place. This ensures that the balls run in their raceways without any undue stress.
