Keilriemen treiben Riementriebe an und besitzen einen trapezförmigen Querschnitt. Sie nutzen aus, dass die Reibung der Flanken des Riemens in der keilförmigen Rille der Riemenscheibe wesentlich höher ist als bei einer flachen Auflage. Sie werden meist endlos gefertigt und bestehen aus Gummi mit einer Textil- oder Stahlseileinlage.
Möglich ist auch, mehrere Keilriemen nebeneinander anzuordnen. Während ihres Einsatzes dehnen sie sich allmählich aus. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dass bei Antrieben mit mehreren parallel laufenden Riemen alle zur selben Zeit gewechselt werden.
In der Praxis werden hauptsächlich folgende Keilriemenarten eingesetzt:
Aufgrund der relativ hohen Bauform von Keilriemen kann es bei der Umlenkung zu Stauchungen an der Innenseite und somit zur Erwärmung des Riemens kommen. Teilweise werden Keilriemen auch gezahnt verwendet, damit auch kleinere Scheibendurchmesser realisiert werden können.
