V-belt designs

V-belt information

V-belts are used to drive belt drives and have a trapezoidal cross-section. They exploit the fact that the friction on the edges of the belt in a wedge-shaped groove is considerably higher than with a flat support. They are usually made endless and are made from rubber with a textile or steel wire core. They can transmit higher torques than flat belts in the same space. The forces acting on the bearings are substantially lower due to the higher friction. However, they are somewhat less efficient than flat belts.

It is also possible to arrange multiple V-belts next to each other. They gradually stretch during use. It is therefore important that they are all changed at the same time when using drives with multiple belts running parallel.

In practice, the following four types of V-belt are mainly used:

  • traditional V-belts;
  • narrow V-belts;
  • raw-edge V-belts;
  • and cogged V-belts.

Traditional V-belts are covered by a layer of fabric and are very reliable.

Narrow V-belts are also covered, but have an improved power transmission.

Raw-edge V-belts have advantages in wear, running accuracy and frictional contact.

Cogged V-belts are preferred for new drives as they have longer lifespans, a lower energy consumption and a greater power transmission.


V-belts are the most common types of drive belt. There are used in motor vehicles, for example, to drive the alternator, the water pump or the hydraulic pump for power steering. They are also used in households, for example in washing machines where they rotate the drum.

Because V-belts are relatively thick, the deflection results in internal compression which causes heat. Therefore, they are also serrated to allow for smaller wheel diameters.


V-belt designations

V-belt designations: Profile designation + length. For example XPZ630. If you do not know the designation, please contact the ekugellager.de customer service department. We will need either the external or internal length of the old belt as a measurement.
