Das Gleitlager ist neben dem Wälzlager die am häufigsten verwendete Lagerart. Die zueinander beweglichen Teile eines Gleitlagers haben direkten Kontakt, wodurch eine hohe Gleitreibung entsteht. Um diese Gleitreibung möglichst gering zu halten, ist es wichtig sich je nach Anwendung entweder für besonders reibungsarme Materialpaarungen (sogenannte Trockenlager) oder für wartungspflichtige Gleitlager (meist Stahl/Stahl- oder Stahl/Bronze-Gleitpaarungen) zu entscheiden.
Bei optimalen Betriebsbedingungen gehören Gleitlager zu den langlebigsten Lagern überhapt.
Obwohl diese Lagerart weitestgehend von den verschiedenen Wälzlagertypen verdrängt wurde, gibt es weiterhin zahlreiche Anwendungen, bei denen der Einsatz von Gleitlagern unerlässlich ist (z.B. sind viele Motoren mit Gleitlagern ausgestattet).
Das Feld der Gleitlager erstreckt sich von Radial- bzw. Axial-Gelenklagern über Gelenkköpfe bis hin zu simplen Gleitlagern in Form von Buchsen (PAP), Bundbuchsen (PAF), Anlaufscheiben (PAW) und Streifen (PAS)
